Since the original publication of The Birth Partner, partners, friends, relatives, and doulas have relied on Penny Simkin's guidance in caring for the new mother, from her last trimester through the early postpartum period.

Now fully revised in its fifth edition, The Birth Partner remains the definitive guide to helping a woman through labor and birth, and the essential manual to have at hand during the event. The Birth Partner includes thorough information on:

  • Preparing for labor and knowing when it has begun
  • Normal labor and how to help the woman every step of the way
  • Epidurals and other medications for labor
  • Pitocin and other means, including natural ones, to induce or speed up labor
  • Non-drug techniques for easing labor pain
  • Cesarean birth and complications that may require it
  • Breastfeeding and newborn care
  • and much more

For the partner who wishes to be truly helpful in the birthing room, this book is indispensable.

4th Edition much preferred! As a childbirth professional and big fan of Penny Simkin, and anticipating being my daughter's doula, I anxiously awaited the publication of the 5th Edition. As I began to read, I was blindsided with politically correct language that labelled the mother-to-be as the "pregnant/laboring/birthing/postpartum person", and removed even the pronouns "she/her." This choice of terminology made the book cumbersome and frustrating to read. I put it aside and ordered the 4th Edition, which did not contain PC language and proved to be an invaluable resource. While I understand that the 5th edition is welcomed by a small percent of the population, I believe that a book that is intended to assist expecting families should contain the same terminology as professional literature, which contains the terms "woman," "she," and "mother," not "person/parent."I believe the best option might be to continue to publish the 4th edition along with the 5th edition, which should have some kind of designation regarding intended audience.Propaganda Honestly didn’t appreciate 75% of this book. It says a few tips here and there, but most of it is just the author (who is a doula) telling the reader that they couldn’t possibly give birth without a doula. Because a doula will be with you during birth... so will a good husband. Because a doula will remember to play music that you wanted to listen to while giving birth... am I paying someone to press play? Because a doula knows the birthing process... well what’s a doctor for and the team of nurses?I’m not trying to say the position of doula isn’t useful, or that no one should get one. It just seemed like this book expresses that without a doula your birth will be horrible and painful and you won’t have your music. Or you can get a doula and with the added person standing taking pictures, holding your water cup, and playing calming music (for a small fee of....) you can have a good and memorable birth of all your children.Just not buying it.Very helpful! I was asked to be my best friend’s birth partner. I haven’t had kids and I wanted to be as supportive and helpful to her as possible. I searched high and low for a good resource and I am so glad I chose this one. I read all of it up to the last section (I didn’t want to freak myself or her out and I figure a doctor would be best to consult in an emergency situation- I sure didn’t go to med school). I kept the book with me into her labor and it made me much more comfortable during the process and most importantly made me much more helpful to her. I was even helping her understand what was going on during her pregnancy, labor and prelabor from information in this book. I felt very prepared. I highly recommend.
