THE INSTANT #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER
Preston & Child return with their bestselling series, confronting FBI Special Agent Pendergast with the one challenge he never expected: a partner.

After an overhaul of leadership at the FBI's New York field office, A. X. L. Pendergast is abruptly forced to accept an unthinkable condition of continued employment: the famously rogue agent must now work with a partner.

Pendergast and his new colleague, junior agent Coldmoon, are assigned to investigate a rash of killings in Miami Beach, where a bloodthirsty psychopath is cutting out the hearts of his victims and leaving them with cryptic handwritten letters at local gravestones. The graves are unconnected save in one bizarre way: all belong to women who committed suicide.

But the seeming lack of connection between the old suicides and the new murders is soon the least of Pendergast's worries. Because as he digs deeper, he realizes the brutal new crimes may be just the tip of the iceberg: a conspiracy of death that reaches back decades.

Great pure crime Pendergast novel This was one of the authors' better pure crime novels starring Pendergast. With this protagonist, the books tend to be one of two types:1) thrillers involving family drama (e.g. Fever Dream, Cabinet of Curiosities, Book of the Dead, The Obsidian Chamber), or2) thrillers that focus on a murder mystery to be solved (e.g. Still Life With Crows, City of Endless Night, etc). This book is of the second sort, and very well done. Although there is a very small amount about Pendergast's home dynamic, it's just enough to be satisfying to us hardcore A.X.L. fans without subverting the unrelated pure crime mystery that follows. I enjoyed this more than City of Endless night, as I felt the unraveling of the story relied less on adrenaline-fueled action scenes, and more on a well-paced, timely unraveling of a psychologically complex criminal case. Verses for the Dead was of course gruesome at times, but somehow never felt borderline gratuitous as it did for me in Endless Night. Emphasis seemed more on Pendergast's process of inductive reasoning, as well as tightly interwoven character development (of both protagonists and antogonists) that seamlessly intertwined into a series of engaging investigative twists and turns. Very few characters are what they seem at first glance, and many end up being surprisingly sympathetic and gratifyingly multi-dimensional. One of the best "pure crime" novels in the series to date.P.S. (I also love a good Pendergast family suspense book, and eagerly await the next one :D)Predictable and formulaic I have followed Agent Pendergast since his adventures in Relic. I've read almost every book that Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child have written - as partners and individually. Their capacity for originality, suspense, erudition, and playfulness kept me glued to every page... until recently.I hate to say this, but they "jumped the shark" in The Obsidian Chamber and have now stopped putting effort into characters that deserve more. Verses for the Dead contained stock characters, a predictable serial killer plot, and a complete lack of suspense.I would much rather they stop writing Pendergast novels until they are ready to give him back the time and effort they put into his earlier adventures. Feel free to take a break and explore other series, but please, don't put out a book with a beloved character if your heart isn't in it. Readers can tell.
